Onimusha: Warlords (PS4)

Onimusha: Warlords brings a Sengoku-period survival action classic back on PS4. First released in 2001, the original sold over 2 million copies, and this version updates it with higher-resolution graphics, 16:9 widescreen and modernised control options.

Sengoku-era survival action

The game is set in Japan's Sengoku period and is centred on sword-based combat that stunned players when it first appeared. The credits note that the character Samanosuke Akechi is by Amuse/Fu Long Production, and that Takeshi Kaneshiro served as guest creator. If you grew up on the original, or want to see where the Onimusha series started, this is the version built to be easy to pick up today. The upgrades are practical ones: a sharper picture, a screen shape that fills a modern TV, and control options updated for today's players. The original's reputation rests on its sword combat, and the publisher's description promises that the same combat is still the star here, so veterans and newcomers are both covered.

Gameplay and features

• Sword-based combat in a survival action format.
• Higher-resolution graphics than the original release.
• 16:9 widescreen support.
• Modernised control options, making the game easier to enjoy than the 2001 original.
• Single-player: 1 player, with DUALSHOCK 4 vibration.
• Arabic on-screen text, along with a wide range of other language options.

Why play it on PS4

The PS4 disc is a straightforward way to play a classic with updated visuals and controls. Because it supports DUALSHOCK 4 vibration, combat gets some physical feedback through the pad. Arabic on-screen text is supported, which helps Arabic-speaking players follow menus and subtitles; the listing do not list Arabic voice acting, so do not expect it. Rated MENA 18, it is intended for adult players. As a physical disc for PlayStation 4 it can be kept, shelved and lent on, and nothing in the listing mentions online play, so you can treat it as a self-contained single-player experience.
