Matterfall (PS4)
Matterfall is a rapid-fire twin-stick shooter for PS4, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and developed by Housemarque, the arcade specialists behind RESOGUN and Alienation. It is a single-player game rated PEGI 12, with PS4 Pro enhancement.
A hero-for-hire in a world of smart matter
You play a hero-for-hire who has to survive high-intensity war zones in vertical cities overrun by mysterious "smart matter". The levels are side-scrolling, and the action is built around arcade-style waves of enemies.
Alien technology becomes your weapon against enemies infected by deadly Red Matter, while Blue Matter can be controlled to manipulate the world and create new areas to explore. It adds a puzzle-like layer to the shooting, since the environment itself can change depending on what you do.
Gameplay and features
- Explosive waves of arcade action in a twin-stick shooter format
- Zero-G flying and extreme aerial agility
- High-powered weapons to experiment with against relentless enemies
- Control Blue Matter to reshape the world and open up new areas
- Locations such as Matter Mines and Hydroponic Farms
- Online leaderboards for chasing high scores against friends
- Single-player, with DUALSHOCK 4 vibration supported
The mix of shooting and traversal is the core loop. You fly in zero G, fire at relentless enemies and reshape parts of the world with Blue Matter, all while working towards a better score on the online leaderboards. Locations such as the Matter Mines and Hydroponic Farms give the vertical cities some variety.
Why play it on PS4
Matterfall is a physical disc for PlayStation 4, and it is enhanced for PS4 Pro with dynamic 4K gaming, improved graphics and environments, and High Dynamic Range visuals. A compatible 4K HDR TV is required to see those improvements.
Housemarque built the game around arcade play, so the high-score leaderboards are part of the appeal. If you want a focused action shooter rather than a long open-ended game, this fits.
